It' has been said that "necessity is the mother of invention". This isn't an invention but this is what I did when I didn't have all the ingredients necessary for the 7 layer bars I wanted to make. Here is the recipe:
1 stick melted butter
1 1/2 cups graham crackers, crushed
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 1/3 cups coconut
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 can sweetened condensed milk
Mix butter and crackers together and press in bottom of 9x13 pan.
Sprinkle choc chips, butterscotch chips, coconut and walnuts on top of crackers. Drizzle milk on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
I had all the ingredients except the graham crackers! However, I DID have Club Crackers.
So I used them instead of graham. The results were delicious! It was still very sweet but had just a little bit of salty too.
While I was preparing this fresh, delicious dessert, my sons had to run an errand. On their way home, they stopped at the local Hostess dumpster. Wearing slacks, shirt and tie, they dove in to score their OWN version of dessert.

They arrived home, laden with these expired, dry, treasures and excited that the earliest expiration date was only November 15th!
The finer things in life ARE free!
I love that dessert. How clever of you to use those crackers.
ReplyDeleteThey have locked the dumpster at our local Hostess store. My sonse used to bring us all sorts of things.
I don't know what happened but the Dumpster is locked. Oh well.
Who would have thought? Sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a great idea! A little salty may make those bars not so sweet and you can eat much more!
ReplyDeleteYou mean i've been PAYING for those things when I could just get them out of a dumpster?!
ReplyDeletemmmmmmmmmmmmm donettes...........
ReplyDeleteOh, and your deal looks yummy too!
Hey, if George Castanza can eat an eclair from the garbage, I guess these guys can get away with it. Besides, the donuts were still in their packages, right? :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I loooove those layer bars! (eating one right now, actually - thanks!)
Connie~ you are the most resourceful woman I know! I've never made these bars but will have to give them a try...
ReplyDeleteLove the dumpster diving story! Just look at all those goodies~ hope they were tasty!
Your 7 layer bars sound yummy... I'll have to make these.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that it makes me mad that stores throw away perfectly good food. Why aren't they sending it to a food bank... Beggers aren't chooser... I would soooo eat that and any kid would. We are such a wasteful nation. Good for your boys!! Yum even if it's from a dumpster :-D... bad for Hostess to wasting food!
I love 7-layer bars - they are so satisfying. I think the crackers would be great in them.
ReplyDeleteThe dumpster diving not so much! ha ha - I cannot believe what they found. Funny!
You know I love those bars but have never made them. I can see how club crackers would make that a great taste and not so sweet.
ReplyDeleteThose hostess donettes are making me thirsty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sondra.. Why are they not sending it to people that are hungry?? Good job for boys that are not wasteful!
ReplyDeleteThose 7 layer bars = HEAVEN.
I love Salty and Sweet things.. and have never made these.. I love to partake.. but have never eaten them. I will make these for sure!
Thanks once again for the recipe!
My mom makes 7 layer "Goodie bars" for every family event we go to and as much as I love them they are always TOO sweet.
ReplyDeleteSO, I am going to try this option to add a little "salty" to the otherwise sweet and decadent bar....Salty and sweet compliment each other perfectly.
Hope you have a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving and I hope your day is surrounded by family, love and MANY wonderful memories!!
Thanks for visiting my blog, Connie! Yes, Wicked was absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to see it again. I just hope I can get seats a little closer to the stage next time.
ReplyDeleteI love that dessert you made here. But I never make it. Hmm.... Christmas baking is coming up so I will have to throw that recipe in. And as for dumpster diving, I would love to do it again. I have a friend who decorated her whole house from the dumpster of a home decorating store. Alas, our dumpsters in my town are patrolled (I live in a college town) and people get tickets... :(
Another great recipe. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing I don't live anywhere near a Hostess dumpster ; )
donuts from the dumpster ---hysterical!!
ReplyDeleteI love the combination of sweety and salty
The dumpster diving sounds like some thing my son would do! LOL boys!!!
