Healthy Body - Keen Mind

In our school district, we have a Healthy Lifestyles program where we are encouraged to take care of ourselves physically and mentally through eating good foods, exercising daily, brushing and flossing our teeth,(yeah, we have to be reminded to do that!) maintaining our weight during the holidays, relaxing and taking time for ourselves and getting a preventative exam (we get a $35.00 gift certificate to the local mall when we get our exam) 

We earn water bottles, sweat shirts, work-out shirts, and other incentives when we are in compliance.

We get emails throughout the month to encourage, inform, educate and remind.  One email mentioned that exercising was “training for old age”.

The professor who sent this said that he felt the younger years were the time to keep in shape to enjoy your older years both physically and mentally.

 One idea to keep your mind keen in your older years is to give your mind a good workout everyday. Elderly who do crossword puzzles, Sudoku, read, and other mind joggers keep their mind active and healthy.

Here are some quotes he sent in the email that I'm beginning to relate to!

I've sure gotten old! I've had two bypass surgeries, a Hip replacement, new knees, fought diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts, have bouts with dementia, have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore, can't remember if I'm 89 or 98, have lost all my friends.

But, thank goodness, I still have my driver's license!


I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.




Reporter interviewing a 104-year-old woman:
"And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?' the reporter asked. She simply replied, "No peer pressure."

It's the beginning of a new year!  Here's to our health!

  1. OH MY GOODNESS! I LAUGHED SO HARD AT THESE, JUST SO VERY CUTE! SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT! HEY, I MADE THOSE MEATBALLS FOR DINNER TONIGHT, WE JUST HAD THEM WITH SPAGHETI AND THEY WERE GOOD...NEXT TIME I WILL ADD A ITALIAN SEASONING PKT.   13. You're lucky you can kick, stretch, kick, and everything else you can do at 50! I have pictures from a certain Sunday exercise class to prove it! :)

    The way you apply everything to life is always so funny and makes me laugh!

    Besides diet and exercise one of the best things you can do for your health is to keep your mind active. I am glad for your reminder today.

    Through Eddie's work there is a "Wellness Program" that you can pass off each month...I passed off 12 last year and I am awaiting my $200.00 check in the mail!

  16. You certainly are blessed with humor. I always seem to get a good chuckle from some of your posts. You are a neat lady. Every time I see you run races or with your children I am amazed at how fit, full of life, smart, and able to keep up with all of those wonderful children and grand children. You inspire me!

    I also loved the peer pressure. LOL! It was great and teh picture is priceless.

    I loved the picture of the old lady and her car!!!! When I was in beauty school we had so many old lady's coming and getting their hair done and I couldnt' believe that mos of them could still drive!! Crazy old lady's.

  19. Oh yes, that continued journey towards good health, youthfull looks, and a keen mind.
    Hubby and I do crossword puzzles every morning over breakfast. It is actually fun. We love the challenge and the things we "learn".
    Then we get on the exercise bike for 30 min.
    You really have to MAKE yourself be aware of your body and mind.

  21. FUNNY! This made me think of my MOM! She's thought she's been old before she really was. She's afraid of loosing her memory. So, she came up with a plan. When she watches tv she writes down all the commercials. We just smile.
