Our elementary school had a week-long project of raising money to help the people in Haiti who have suffered the effects of the devastating earthquake. Each class had a 5-quart, plastic, ice-cream bucket where they eagerly placed their coins and dollars.
Today was the assembly where we met to total the money. Each class had a student who brought their bucket of hard earned money, with a total amount written on a piece of paper, to the front of the gym and poured it in a large, see-through bin. Because of the amount of coins in some containers, children needed help lifting their bucket high enough for pouring. When all the money was brought forward, there was a drum roll and the amount of money was announced. $2,675.00!
The students cheered and laughed and high-fived! The principal announced that the studentbody could stand up and dance to the beat of the drum for 30 seconds to celebrate their accomplishments....and dance, they did! I wish I had a movie camera to capture the excitement and the dance moves of our students!
What a joy service brings! What a great lesson for our elementary students! What a blessing for the people in Haiti!
There are many ways to serve. Head on over to Kristina's blog to see how you can serve the elderly!
Wish I had been there. So cool for the kids to learn how good it feels to help other people.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the shout out, Connie!
ReplyDeleteThat's so awesome.
ReplyDeleteGood for those kids!
It doesn't take much to make a big difference.
Our elementary school did the same thing. It is a "Good Thing"...helping others and teaching service at the same time!!
ReplyDeleteI love that they danced! I wish you had a camera for that one too.
ReplyDeleteYep, I've served the Seniors already, it feels good!
That is so wonderful.
ReplyDeleteIt would have been so fun to see them dancing--service feels good.
Yay for service
ReplyDeleteChildren are so giving.. and humble.. and I love that they will dance and they don't care who sees them.. It's no wonder we should be like a child! :)
I say we always dedicate 30 seconds for dancing after service.
ReplyDeleteImagine how long Kristina will be dancing after her Snuggie drive.
Awesome about raising all that money! I love the waffle goodies here too..YUM! Come say hi :D
ReplyDeleteThat is very cool. I can just see the excitment on those kids faces...and the dancing.
ReplyDeleteDid you boogie along?

That is awesome!! Excitement from children one of the sweetest things in life. BTW - glad we're on the same page about so linguistically talented :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! That is quite a large amount of money for an elementary school. I just LOVE to see the joy and excitement of kids...especially kids who are excited about helping others.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that service brings more JOY then words can describe.
So lucky that you got to be a part of witnessing that service dance. That will be a moment you will remember.
Hope you're having a happy day!
What a wonderful experience for those children! Learning the joy of service while young is so important.
ReplyDeleteThat is really awesome! A great teaching moment too!
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine those kids dancing so joyfully:)
How wonderful that they not only got a chance to serve, but that the school let them celebrate it! How fun to dance and I love how they kept order by it being 30 seconds. So funny!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great fundraiser. Good job to the kids and yah for dancing.
ReplyDeleteI finally got a chance to read your blog again and had to laugh. I love your blog.
Oh yes, I do remember the baby carriers. I had some just like that one you had. In fact, I had the exact same one. I also had a pink one. I remember going on trips with the kids all over the car,VW bus, and others. They loved it. Sure brought back some fun memories.
The babies are adorable.
Our school is doing a fundraiser for Haiti also. We are collecting items for Hygiene Kits.
