Bringing in the New Year!

Christmas came and went so fast!  It's time to start a new year and get back to work!  Here are a few pics from our New Year's eve/birthday for son-in-law - party.  We play the same game every year, and every year I think it will be the last time we play.  (Kind of like every year on Christmas eve, when I'm out shopping for last minute gifts, I vow to get all my shopping and preparations for next year's Christmas finished by Thanksgiving!)

We play the candy bar game.  It starts with the booty placed in the middle of the room.

Since it's called the candy bar game, we for sure have candy bars but we add other goodies, such as; pencils, books, nuts, gum, etc.
There needs to be something that everyone is going to want!

It's not a successful candy bar game if someone doesn't cry.  Not sure why that's in the rules, but it is.
We make a circle around the cache.  We each have a paper bag to hide the goods. There are 2 sets of dice; one set goes clockwise around the circle, the other counter clockwise.

If you roll doubles you get to choose something from the middle and put in your bag.

Then you roll again.  If you get doubles again, you take something from the middle. If you roll doubles 3 times in a row, you dump what's in your bag, back in the middle.

Poor Emily - she's a good sport!

If you don't roll doubles, you just pass the dice to the next player.  When you roll doubles, you can ask someone for something they have in their bag.

If they have it, you get it!  If they don't have it and you've asked for it, you dump your bag.  Can you see why there could be crying?  (As you can see by this picture of Kels, It was a successful game)

 Or angry biting?

The game can go on for hours or you can hurry it up by allowing those who roll a 7 or 11 to take something from the middle.  Or you can be like Dan,

and nonchalantly take things from the middle to put in your bag or your neighbor's bag.  (I think that's called cheating or is it strategy?)

In the end, we make sure everyone has something.

Happy Birthday to Andy the Younger!

May 2011 treat all of you with kindness!
I hope your tears will be tears of joy!

That looks like a fun game.....sorta. It is all good till someone is crying.

OK I am going to nag you this year. I want you to buy 3 Christmas gifts a month.....and get them wrapped. Start tomorrow. That should get you ahead by Christmas eve.
Sounds good huh? I have vowed to do the same. No more of this procrastinating stuff.

I remember when you posted about this game last year--I'm afraid we can never play that game--THE CRYING WOULD GET REALLY UGLY ; )

Have a great 2011.

We play that game with office supply stuff, like notebooks, pencils, etc., but we don't use the bag part. Interesting. And I might cry too if somebody stole my multiple-colored notecards!

Happy New Year, friend.

That's a crazy game - I love when you just make up your own rules. And I love candy bars, so... it would follow I would love the game!

Sounds like a typical family game/gathering. Always a few tears. (sometimes it is me ..tee,hee)
oh...and I always thought CHEATING WAS strategy.

Sounds like any game in our family! Someone either cries or gets kind of huffy. Good times! Mimi

Connie,
The 'candy bar game' is one of our families favorite games!
It always brings out the laughter and the competition in everyone :)
Hope that 2011 is a year filled with happiness, memories and blessings for your family!

I had saved your game from when you posted it last. We played your game this year. All my kids are late teens, early 20's, but no grandkids, yet. So I made them play for their stocking stuffers on Christmas. We didn't have any large size paperbags so I gave everyone two lunch size paperbags and if anyone rolled doubles three times in a row we made everyone dump one of their bags. It made for a whole new strategy of what to put in what bag. We had a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing the game.

I too.. remembered this from last year.. but didn't know the rules.

Funny about the crying..as we are all so competitive.. it's like that here with the ADULTS! haha.. just kidding.

Games that make kids cry is what holidays are all about. Not sure about the biting though.

I still have the teeth marks in my arm. I guess I shouldn't have asked her for the Bubbalicious. FUN PARTY!

We love playing the candy bar game too, but our rules have not included the dumping of bags, so it finishes up more quickly! Hmmm...we might just have to incorporate that rule, muahaha! >:D

Nothing like a little crying to strenghten those family bonds!
Haven't played the Candy Bar game for a long time... perhaps I should introduce it to my kids. :)
