This past summer, we got a 2005 Ford Taurus.
It was hand delivered and has been a good car...smooth ride, quiet interior, and no rust! Since then, we've had 2 children return home from missions, and have had a few cars "die." So, it's come down to this:
Since I don't drive as far to work as the others in our family, I get to drive the car that has been parked on the side of our house for the past month.
Meet "The Zipper!"
Jordan got this 1981 Toyota Tercel for free when he was 16 (the original owner was going to take it to the scrap yard). With a lot of work, money and TLC, it came to life. Jordan drove it all through high school. When he left on his mission, Jacob drove it. It's good to add some bedazzling to a somewhat hum-drum car...
whether it be flames, a flying eyeball or vinyl words on the back window. (I have no idea what it means but I keep my cell phone close so I can make that phone call)
There are some rules that go along with this car:
1. Make sure it warms up for a while or it will die when you push on the gas.
2. Don't turn the heat thermometer to cool or the collant will leak out.
3. If you roll down the windows, you need to moisten (lick) your hands and pull the window up while cranking.
4. Don't drive it over 60 mph.
The upside of driving the car...the awesome boom-boom speakers in the back! Oh yeah!
I'm not complaining. It gets me where I need to go...just not where I WANT to go!
P.S. Are gas fumes ok to breathe?

I remember my first car. Not as beat up as that, but it had it's problems!
Ah, but I bet it gets decent gas mileage!
Awesome! Hey, it works, right? :)
I'm sorry. Do you have a bike? I'll keep you in my prayers :)
What a good sport you are!! Only a mother would do this...right?! ;-)
As long as it runs. And I'm guessing you don't have to pay collision insurance--that's a bonus, eh ; )
Hey, isn't there a law that say's, "when mothers have born and raised their family and taken care of their dad for years, that she gets to drive the nicest car and everyone will take care of it for her and it can park in the garage"?
Oh, you didn't know that? Well now you do, so tell everybody else. Now is your time.......

Well it looks like you are going to be the COOLEST hot-rod momma driving down the road...AND rockin' out!!!
Too funny!
Your a good Momma!
I know what you mean... we have one of those cars as well. We have a nice Suburban.. and then our old beater Saturn that looks pathetic.. as well as it has it's quirks. :)
My Dad also drives one of these.. and he calls it his Temple car. He figures if he always uses it to drive to the temple.. it won't die. J/k.. no but really.. it's kinda awesome to have something you don't owe anything on.. and driving "them" keeps ya humble! :)
I guess if I really HAD to I could sacrifice my nice ride.
Is there room for a ventilator?
So great that you have a good sense of humor about it!
LOL...Zipper is a cutie! Atleast it came out before all these later ones with all their problems! :D
You won't smell the fumes if you keep it under a half tank of gas or only turn left.
It sure made my 1990 Honda look nice parked beside it! :)
LOL, Very Funny! I just had a vision of you pulling up to work with your BOOM- BOOM speakers doing their thing!
Gas Fumes are not healthy!
Your transportation is making my squeak mobile look like a luxury car.
Oh this was a cute post. Zipper the beater car - I love it. Don't we all have one of those. Usually the kids drive it but somehow the parents end up with it too.
I love the rules for driving the car - It definately makes it more interesting.
Enjoy the zipper!
So funny!
I'll remember to keep you and the zipper in my prayers!
Everyone needs a vehicle like that in their family... we have an old '89 Ford Ranger affectionately called P.J. (Piece of Junk.) It's similar to Zipper. Can't drive it over 60, need wet hands to open the windows, etc. The cool thing about PJ is that is back fires when you shift it into 3rd gear!
LOVE IT!!!
