"Before You Came Old!"

A few years ago, Joan, Lorie, and I visited an elementary school where there was a special education unit.   The three of us worked in the transitional kindergarten class at another school and several of our former students were in this special ed class.  I approached the desk of a boy who was busy coloring.

I squatted down so I was eye level with him and said, "Hi Tanner!"  He looked at me then broke in to a smile and said, "I know you!  You used to be my teacher before you came old!"

Is there a fine line that defines the time between being young and "coming" old?

Perhaps it's when you decide that coloring your hair is a real pain and you allow the new color (or lack there of) to display itself in all its glory.

Maybe it's when the sales clerk thinks you're your mother's sister!

Is it determined by how many or how old your grandchildren are?

Could the defining line be when you're given a senior discount at a restaurant without being asked?

While standing in a long line to vote and someone comes up and offers you a chair, does that mean you're old?

Maybe it's being in the bottom half of the half-marathon finishers.

I can't be old when, inside, I feel like I'm 20.  In my opinion, old is ALWAYS 10 years away.

Please excuse me while I get my dose of Geritol.

Connie, with all you do with your family, your job, your physical activities, you are never going to get old.

The older I get, the older old seems to be. It used to be 40, and now it's more like 80!

Oh yes. I wish I didn't relate so well to this post but I do. I remember that very first time I was given the senior discount. I was offended and shocked. Since then, I've gotten use to it. :(

Haha! Kid's are good like that. :) People used to always tell me I looked so young for my age (which was a little bothersome at the time) then a few years ago that just stopped...huh.

OLD is never us....but always people OLDER then us.
like you said, at LEAST 10 years away.
Too bad that even though our minds think like we are still 20...that our bodies don't respond.
phoooey
We'll never get old.

I'm with you - and if I had your beautiful hair I wouldn't color mine either. You can't trust small children - consider their perspective. 16 years old is old to them. And if you're offered that chair? Take it! That goes for the discount too. I have no pride when it comes to those.

Give me your address, I'll get you your Geritol STAT!

That is hilarious.
I love little kids. Being in the nursery as my calling was a real eye-opener.

I hope you have a great weekend!

Old is a state of mind. If you don't mind, no one else will :-).

We are not old, just seasoned to perfection :-).

This is so true as I am finding out the older I get.
Having my kids here all week I just feel the same age they are - but obviously I am not and they do not see me as that because I am not but inside...Yep I feel the 20 something.

Age is just a state of mind. I don't feel very old UNTIL I LOOK IN THE MIRROR ; )

I think you look fabulous.

Who defines what "old" is? I've seen people 5 years younger than me, act and look 20 years older than me. I believe "old" is in your heart and since I refuse to grow up, I will always be young!
(I wish someone would tell my eyes and knees that!)

Sheesh!! It's not like you need a walker or something.

Maybe in ten years :)

Take heart... I always tell my sweetie pie that he'll always be older than me.

Just hang out with someone older than you, and let them have all the 'old ' attentions!

It makes me mad that people are now solicitous of me. That gives me an idea of how they are seeing me. I don't like it. I like your funny post though.

I'll go with that too! I think back to my grandma at 59 and she seemed so old! And now it's not very old at all...Mimi

I sure would like to be able to let my hair turn gracefully.

I don't have the pretty color though.

I saw this one lady in one temple on our temple trip and I wanted to go tell her what gorgeous hair she had. BEEutiful white hair!!

I love the line that old is always 10 years away! Sad that I am now starting to pay attention to the makeup tips for older women. GAH!

You are the youngest, purtiest, hippest grey-haired lady I know.

And I take full credit for your lovely aura of grey, being that I talked you into it.

One day this week I did a drive through at Taco Bell. The total, according to the talking sign, was $5.11. I got my money ready, exact change of course, and when I got to the window the nice young man said $4.87. Smiling he said, I gave you your senior discount. Now I ask you...how did he know by my voice? blessings, marlene

I like your attitude!

=)

PS. I regret to say that I have had a few of the experiences you listed above. ;)

So, this is something to look forward to?

I have students who see me from the 1st or 2nd grade who are pretty sure I must be 50. My class is quite a bit closer to my actual age though I tell them I've 87...

I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever feel old / grown-up. I guess maybe not. Glad I'm not the only one!
