Lion House Pantry Rolls and Signs of Spring

The Lion House Pantry is a restaurant in Salt Lake City.  It's famous for their delicious food and especially the rolls.  They're big, fluffy and delicious!  I bought some the other day and they were on sale for $4.99 a dozen!  I think that's expensive but I bought them anyway.  After getting home I decided to check to see if there was a recipe for these delightful rolls!  I not only found a recipe, but a video on how to form them!

Lion House Pantry Rolls
2 cups warm water (110 to 115 degrees)
2 tablespoons dry yeast
2 teaspoons salt
1 egg
2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder (instant or non-instant)
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter or shortening
5-5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour

In large bowl of electric mixer, combine water and milk powder, stir until dissolved. Add yeast, then sugar, salt, butter, egg, and 2 cups flour. Mix on low speed of mixer until ingredients are wet, then 2 minutes at medium speed. Add 2 cups more flour; mix on low speed until ingredients are wet, then for 2 minutes as medium speed.
(Dough will be getting stiff and remaining flour may need to be mixed in by hand).
Add about ½ cup flour and mix again, by hand or mixer. Dough should be soft, not overly sticky, and not stiff.

(This is what mine looked like at the end. I tried to take a picture while it was still on the hook but wasn't fast enough.  I used 5 1/4 cups flour.)
(It is not necessary to use the entire amount of flour.) Scrape dough off sides of bowl and pour about 1 T. vegetable oil all around the sides of the bowl so it is covered with oil.
Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise in warm place until double in size.
(I sprayed a bowl with vegetable spray and placed the dough in that)
You can form it into what ever shape you want but if you want it to look kind of like the original rolls, watch this video.

Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Mine aren't as big as the store bought roll, but to be honest, they tasted better!

Here are a few signs around our house that spring is on it's way!

Daffodils ready to bloom.

Forsythia bush with yellow buds.

Apricot tree ready to blossom.

Jordan heading to UVU in his shorts and pink shirt.  I think he's going to get beat-up.
Enjoy your day!

Yeah!! I've wanted this recipe for a long time. I think your homemade roll looks wonderful! Yum!

Congratulations on your new grandbaby!!

You crack me up with your comment about Jordon... At least he has a nice car - it may save him.. ha ha ha!

I loved your comment yesterday! I loved all the fun things you do for your class for St. Patty's day. I wish I had younger kids... but I think my toilet water needs to be green - LOL!

I'm loving the spring crocuses I've seen around. Buds and flowers peeking out of the ground are exciting. Today it is 65 degrees. I'm loving it!!

Oh, Oh, Oh, I love those rolls. I can walk to the Lion House for lunch if I want. (I drive though)
I need to walk.

Anyway thanks for the video.
I got out and worked in my yard today. It was grand!

Jordan will only get beat up if he wears those socks, or are those his legs? LOL

Well I guess since Jordan is wearing shorts I can wear mine. I spent an hour yesterday out front raking up leaves so I can see my little plants.

J is much too tall, dark, and handsome to get beat up. No worries.

Oooo those sound good. I love making bread and may need to add this to my repetoire. I assume the butter needs to be fully softened first, yes?

MMMM....Looks like I need to make a visit south - unless they're already gone.
We looked for signs of spring around here, too. And saw lots of pink shirts... on GIRLS!!!

I've made those rolls too...with the help of the video. Mine didn't turn out as well as yours did. I couldn't get the whole flip thing down..and wondered why only half of my roll would raise...it was weird.

WOw, those rolls look great! I will have to try those, thanks for sharing the recipe.

I know I don't let Cyrus wear his pink shirts until spring time. There's a time and a place for everything.

I really think that we were twins in a different life because we are always cooking the same things without knowing the other person made those things the same day or the same week. Great minds think alike!

Lion House rolls are my favorite roll recipe to make and I have some rising right now for Ethan's birthday party tomorrow.

I have never rolled them into the typical Lion House Roll shape, I either make them into Parker House Rolls, OR, just cut them with a large biscuit cutter and then use them for buns for sloppy joes or sandwiches.

Here is a link to my post I did last year about this recipe. http://pinkcookieswithsprinkles.blogspot.com/search?q=lion+house

Thanks for sharing the FUN video and for sharing your hints of SPRING with us. Still trying to get our snow melted in South East Idaho. It is going to be another few weeks before we have little green sprouts poking out from the ground.

Gotta run as Ethan just got off the bus. Have a GREAT day! Enjoy the sunshine and your transforming yard!

So glad spring is here. I don't even mind the rain showers, just knowing that we are headed for some warmer days.

I love that the Deseret Book in my town has a Lion House Pantry where I can go buy those rolls. They are definitely the BEST -- hands down! I also love their Orange Rolls... hmmmm.... haven't thought about those for a while. 'Scuse me! I've got an errand to run!

I think Lion House rolls are a mormon woman's staple aren't they! They are definately the best!
