Two Halves Make A...

...very sore old woman!

On Saturday, 9-10-11, I ran my second half marathon in 3 weeks.
I still had a sore knee from the Hobble Creek marathon so I wore a brace on my left knee and a band on the right.  With that much support, I was ready to run!

(I like to be at the back of the lineup to race, especially if I'm wearing a timing chip.  That way, I don't have a bunch of people passing me.)

Before mile 4, I was doing pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.   By mile 5, I realized the knee brace and silly band didn't do anything for these sore, old, knees.  They were ON FIRE!  And I'm not talking about speed.  They caused So. Much. Pain!

Several times throughout the race I wondered if I was going to be able to finish - but I did!  In fact,  a half block from the finish line, the man in the picture below, ran along side of me and said, "Let's get across!"  For some reason, that was enough to motivate me to pour it on. How nice of the man to let the old lady cross the line first!

I didn't come in last!  My time was 2:33:27.
I got third place in my age group...out of 3!  Not superb, but that's OK.  I finished!

Right after the race, we went to a family reunion in West Haven.  I iced my knees during the hour and a half drive.  On the way back, we stopped at the Burger Bar in Roy to have some delicious shakes.

A raspberry fresh lime shake is just the treat to soothe the fire knees!

I'm taking a week off from running to make sure I heal.

Congrats on finishing. I have never ever been a runner. I could walk a half marathon, maybe. I would take one of those goodies afterwards too.

I think you are incredible to run through that pain.

Congrats and enjoy your well deserved rest.

You are amazing to be able to finish in that much pain. I am glad that you treated yourself to a delicious looking shake. Glad to hear you are taking some time off to recoup.

Hooray for half marathons and the people that run them! You're awesome....and so is that shake! I still think we should do that marathon in Maui next year. We'll talk about it once the fire goes away in your knees.

You're amazing! Two half-marathons, with sore knees! I've never run that far, though I did once win a first place medal in a 5k.
Turns out I was the ONLY one in my age division. :)

You go girl! Makes my knees hurt just hearing about it. We had a burger at the Burger Barn a couple of weeks ago. The lime raspberry shake sounds delish. Mimi

Only a week off? I would take a six-month break and eat more ice cream.

You are wonder woman. Really.

well I am certainly glad you know the best medicine/remedy for sore knees (or any pain for that matter) A DELICIOUS MILKSHAKE

you need to be careful of those sore knees missy, I am amazed and proud of you on these races, but these dang knees of ours as we age, seem to not hold up as well as we'd like
(that's my story...tee,hee)

I love walking hard, but have never been a runner. I have heard of so many people "running" lately, I am starting to feel pretty lazy.

good Job ...you are a determined lady, I can tell.

Did you spread that ice cream in your fire knees.....some how I doubt it. lol.

Thank you for the kind words about my dog.

You Rock! Hats off to you my friend. I can't even WALK around the block without something hurting, so you've got it going on girl.
The rotten thing about getting older is that when you wake up with some sort of new pain, you can almost guarantee it is going to be a constant part of your life now. Darn it!
Those treats looks like they might just be worth the burning knees.

The whole time I was reading this I kept thinking Oh how I wish I could be the woman you are honey.
I am really proud of you for finishing because many would have not including myself.
How long have you been running these marathons.
Please take a rest now and get your knees back in good running condition
Love
Maggie

Hi Connie,

I popped over to say "Hello". So sorry you couldn't join us at the bloggy dinner, but thank you for stopping by & leaving a comment on my blog. Congrats on the two half marathons. Very impressive! Hope we get to meet sometime.

Warmly, Michelle

I've read this post several times. I am in awe by you. What determination you have. Not only would I have not even thought of attempting this, but I would have stopped with the first pain. But you kept going! What a woman you are!!

Congrats on the second half marathon completion, though I sympathize with your knee pain.

Thanks for the comment on my blog -- how funny to "run into" you again in the blogosphere -- your daughter Candace did great at Hobble Creek! I finished third in that race; well, third from last, but I walked the last five miles on purpose so I could taper for the marathon.

I went walking on my little trail this morning (the 2 mile section) and my calves started hurting. I wanted to turn around right then and head back down hill.... After reading this, I'm glad I didn't. A poor little stiff calf is NOTHING compared to running half a marathon on aching knees. Way to go!! And I totally think that any doctor would recommend those shakes as therapy to help in healing!

Wow! That's incredible! I can't even run around the block without passing out! Seriously, I'm impressed!
DO you think they make quad jogging strollers? This way I could still get my running in when my hubby is out of town. :D

Amazing! I wish I could do the same. My knees are really bad but I so need the exercise. How long have you been running?

Great job!
