Lion House Cookbook

Ann Marie from Old Fashioned Girl, sent me a wonderful package! She had a giveaway and I won! Hooray! She sent this beautiful angel for my tree. That was a total surprise!

I thought the giveaway was only this cookbook. Ann is so thoughtful. This Lion House Christmas Recipes was published in 1989! I looked through it and realized that most of the recipes require a trip to the store to make it just right. There are meat recipes, soups, appetizers, drinks and desserts. I tried a dessert.

Spencer W. Kimball's Raspberry Cheese Cake:

This is more like lemon cheese cake with raspberries. It's really good.

1 3 pz. pkg lemon jello
1 cup boiling water
1 cup evaporated milk - chilled and whipped
1 8 oz. package cream cheese, softened
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/2 cup butter
28 graham crackers, crushed
1 cup whipping cream, whipped and sweetened
1 to 2 cups fresh or frozen raspberries
Dissolve gelatin in hot water; cool and blend in whipped evaporated milk

The milk will increase in volume but not whip up like whipping cream. Anyway, mine didn't.

Beat cream cheese with sugar. Gently combine gelatin mixture and cream cheese and fold in lemon juice. (I didn't gently do that, I just added the gelatin to the cream cheese and beat it in my Kitchen Aid mixer.)

Melt butter and combine with cracker crumbs. It took 3 packs of graham crackers to get the 28 (actually it was 27 if you want to get really detailed) Place half of crumbs on bottom of 9x13 pan. Pour gelatin/cream cheese mixture on top and sprinkle with remaining crumbs. Chill at least 3 hours.(Mine was very runny but it set up beautifully over night) Serve with whipped cream and fesh or frozen raspberries. Makes 12 - 15 servings.

This was really good. I took it to my family Christmas party and it was a hit! This would also be good as a summer dessert! (Just don't serve it on the snowman plate)

Now, I'm just wondering. Do you have a secret family recipe that you will never give out to others or do you feel flattered when someone asks for the recipe and you allow it to be shared?

Have a Happy Week Before Christmas!

Most of the time I am willing to share, and always willing to share with family.
My grandmother made hot german potato salad for Christmas Eve every year. She would never give anyone the recipe and took it to her grave. My Dad and my Aunt got together and pieced what they could remember together from helping her, and we still have that every year, but we know it isn't exactly like hers was.
My husband's Grandmother made this great honey wheat bread, and she also took the recipe to her grave. Her husband really missed having that bread when she was gone, and I think that if we had had the recipe it would have been a comfort to him to be able to eat that bread and think of her.

Congrats on winning the giveaway. Bloggers are such generous, giving women aren't they!

Oh wow, that recipe looks like something right up my alley. I love cheesecake. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I'm not much of a cook so I don't get asked for my recipes often, but when I do, I share!

Ann Marie is SUCH a sweetheart and always goes the extra mile! Your cookbook and angel will be treasures.

Regarding recipes...I have a friend who refuses to give out recipes to friends and it kind of bugs me because it's not like she came up with the recipe. She had to get it from someone else.

Like I have said before, you and I think SO much alike. I was going to make the title of my almonds/caramels post "Recipes are for sharing". People ask me all of the time why I so generously share my recipes and I always say because there not my recipes. I got them from someone else, OR, I took a recipe and adapted it for my family and what ingredients I had on hand and I like to share.

Thank goodness for the sweet lady that I mailed me a copy of her cinnamon almonds recipe because this has been a family favorite and a hit with others for over 9 years.

Sorry to ramble...my mom has made that Cheesecake recipe before and it is light and fluffy and delicious!!

Enjoy your last day of work and then you have TIME OFF...WOO HOO!

Mmmmmmm... sounds really good. And I have never withheld a recipe. I think it is a great way to share a little love when we share food and recipes. I love it. Plus, I think of the person who shared it with me when I am making it!

One more day, one more day...

Love the angel.

The dessert sounds (and looks) yummy.

I don't have any secret family recipes, but if I did I'd like to think I'd share.

That cheesecake looks great and I love that it was a prophet's favorite. It's fun to know things like that about them.

I always share (and feel flattered for sure) when anyone asks for a recipe. It's funny because often even when I give someone the recipe they later ask when I'm making it again because they are afraid to make it because it won't turn out the same or they're too busy.

Thank you for writing such nice things! You are so nice!!

I am amazed you have already made a recipe from the book!!
I have not tried that recipe yet.. It looks so yummy.. I may have to very soon! I love that it was Kimball's favorite. I loved President Kimball!

I admit.. I used to be a recipe snob. But how could I be.. when I don't make them up.. I get them from everyone else!! :)

I agree with Kimmie.. Recipes are for sharing!

I have one...it's my granola. And don't ask me for it...i'll never give it out! NEVER! What fun would that be to get something once a year that you already have the recipe for?

I'm sorry I missed your cheesecake!
DANG IT!

Cheesecake is my FAVORITE!

I think unless you're Mrs. Fields or a total jerk, you should share your recipes.

And if you are Mrs. Fields or a total jerk, then you shouldn't expect anyone else to share recipes with you. That is all.

And I loved this cake. Thanks!
