Waste Not!

My friend gave me two large boxes of Jonathan apples.  I was excited to make more apple pie filling. When I opened the first box and saw that the apples were the size of large golf balls, I wanted to throw it all out but realized how wasteful that would be so I made applesauce instead.

(Compare the size of the large Red Delicious apple and the small Jonathan)
I got the first box of apples washed, cut in half and cooked until soft.  The apples were put in our handy, dandy strainer (thanks Sheri for the tip about using the drill!)  A few days later, I opened the other box.  Same size but mixed with some Golden Delicious.  Made more applesauce.

It's interesting to see the difference in color of the applesauce.  The one on the left is all Jonathan, the one on the right, the mixture.  I got 20 quarts.

Now this is what's left after the straining.  What do I do with it?  I don't want to waste it.  Could I make apple core jelly like I did the peach pit jelly?  No, probably not since this has been cooked, most of the flavor is already gone.  So what can I do with this "garbage?"

Hmmm, I have an idea!  Get a brown paper bag.

Put a few cups of the apple garbage in the bottom. Fold over the top of bag, staple shut, and place on the door step.

Light a match and there you have it!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Too bad we're not neighbors!

Baked apple!! This reminded me of a grouchy fellow that lived in College Ward (which is where I grew up) and every Halloween someone would burn a pile of cow manure on his porch. Apples would smell much better!

You got a lot out of those box of apples. AND, I love the drill idea!!! I'm an applesauce fan, so lucky you!
Have a great day.

You are amazing! It's funny to see how small those apples were. I need to be better at not wasting. If someone had given be that box of apples - I wouldn't have known what to do with them. Your apples sauce looks yummy. I love the drill idea - very clever.

you are so funny. Probably smells a lot better than the usual burning bag on a doorstep. Nice work!

That is a great idea! A lot better than apple core jelly. :) And with that huge bowl that you had left over, you could line your walks on Halloween night as festive iluminaries! :) (not sure about the spelling)

I have a grocery bag full of golf ball sized Jonathon apples too! Not enough to do much with...perhaps I'll skip straight to the burning!!!

Connie you ALWAYS give me a good laugh when I stop by your Blog.

I too hate things to go to waste and so I am always trying to find creative ways to use the abundance of food that we have this time of year.

I love the pink color that the Jonathan apples give to the applesauce. I can't wait to enjoy some applesauce. It's my first year for canning applesauce as well.

Happy Halloween to you!! I bet you are the most FUN neighbor on your block!!
